Friends and Allies,

Our hope is that you have enjoyed many hours of warm conversations, sharing of great meals, and much needed rest with family and friends during this season of the celebration of Jesus' birth! With the presents unwrapped and leftovers almost gone, many of us are turning our attention to 2012...new opportunities, celebrations, and challenges. I've been feeling that "pull" to just get 2011 over with and start over with the New Year. However, I've also been sensing a "different pull" if you will, to enjoy this day...and not rush it!

Before we know it, we will be seeing Christmas decorations going back up (in October!) to gather again. Time goes by too fast and we miss the "days in between" the events, celebrations, vacations etc. We need Trail Markers in life. Markers that help us understand where we've been, and guide us on the journey ahead.

The more trail markers we can identify in life, the more sense we can make out of life.(the good and not so good) What will you do with your "Days in Between" Christmas and New Years"? What will you do with all of the "Days in Between" in the coming year? Will we get caught up in "living for the weekends", "can't wait til vacation", Paydays, retirement, graduations etc.etc.? What will your Trail Markers and Days Between look like? Where will they lead you into...or out of?

We are thankful, that for many years, one of our "Days in Between" has included Tuesday nights, and Saturday mornings at The Barn. www.barnbrothers.org So much has happened this year! Trail Markers for many men and their families have been created, and I believe that their "Days in Between" have more significance than they ever have for those that have been willing to engage and take risks! It's not always easy...but we know that engaging, staying the course and taking risk is So Worth It!

If we put words to what has happened this year it would include many testimonies of many men that experienced an Awakening of their Hearts to More Life and More Freedom and More Intimacy in their walk and Calling with Jesus Christ. The wonderful outcome of this is men, marriages, families, and friendships on the adventurous journey of revelation, healing and restoration!

What’s God up to in a Barn?

In March of 2005, eightmen began meeting to do a “Wild atHeart” DVD series in the second story of a “Barn” ten minutes south of Charlotte near Indian Land, SC…since then hundreds of men’s lives, and their families havebeen impacted! EVERY Tuesday night men gather from 15+ different churches, and somehave no church.

“My marriage was blowing apart when a friend-who didn’t knowabout my marriage problems-invited me to come hang out with a bunch of men…in abarn! The encouragement and direction I have received from the ‘Barn Brothers’has been crucial in our miraculous marital turnaround.” -32 year-old husband andfather of two

Each week, we are humbled by these stories and testimonies of menexperiencing healing and restoration, aswell as more of the Freedom and Life that Jesus came to give us all. (Luke4:18) The lasting good fruit is spreading into their marriages, families &friendships!

We want men to quit taking the “Lone Ranger” approach tolife and open their hearts to three of the most important biblical principlesthat Jesus intended for a man tounderstand and live by:

· The importance of walking with other men. Even the disciples were sentout in pairs to walk together.

· To realize they are not the only ones in the midst of their every-daybattles, great and small.

· To discover their trueidentity as God’s beloved sons-sons called to fight-alongside of others, for their own hearts, marriages, families,communities, and churches.

We’re reaching out to friends and asking for a couple of crucialthings:

1 – We need your prayers. We’re serious about this. This is a battle andthe enemy greatly opposes what we do. Weneed “cover”- seriously. We want God to continue to direct us in all ourendeavors. We get calls every week asking“How do you do this?” and we are looking to provide training for others thatwant to offer this. We want to sharewhat we’ve learned over the years to others. We currently have opportunities tostart initiatives in Rock Hill and Huntersville. There are men driving 50+ miles ONE WAY to hang out witha bunch of men in a barn. Amazing things are happening and we feel God iscalling us to expand but want to be sure we’re hearing Him clearly. Your prayers can help support all this.

2 - We need financial support. We are involved in a number of things thatrequire it…

· Day-to-day ministry andoutreach to the men that God brings across our path. It is our desire to helpall men walk in the wholeness and freedom that we see happening within ourgroups regularly.

· Providing scholarshipsfor men to regional and national men’s events.

The Barn and CBMC thank Joe Kissack - The Fourth Fisherman - for being with us tonight. Joe told us he doesn't preach or teach....just tells his story. He was a Hollywood-TV-executive-kinda-fella who had everything...he thought. The driven life of performance eventually sent him in a downward spiral until he experienced a divine disruption....or two. A big part of his journey involves his connection several years ago with three Mexican fisherman who were blown 5, 500+ miles from their fishing spot and endured nine months at sea in a very small boat with nothing but rainwater, raw sea animals...and faith. Joe has written a compelling book about this story that will be released in March 2012 and is destined to become an impactful movie. Intense Game of Football on the "Barn Turf"

"You Barn dudes are AWESOME! My kids came home talking a mile a minute! Fishing, shooting guns, hot dogs, coke, chips (not particularly in that order!),and, the icing on the cake,"the devotional was awesome Mom!" That said by my son! Last year we took 25 men through the Fathered By God 8 week DVD series by John Eldredge and his team at Ransomed Hearts Ministries. At the end of the 8 weeks we asked the participants their thoughts about the series. The most consistent response that we received, other than they loved it, was that "we could spend much more time on each of the stages...more than just one week...there is so much good stuff in there".

So...Starting this Tuesday...and going for as long as it might take, we're going go deeper into the six stages that a man goes through as he matures in life and faith. After playing college basketball in Oklahoma, Michael ministered with Athletes in Action/Campus Crusade and has been leading the charge ministering to men around the region with Zoweh based in Raleigh/Durham/Chapel Hill for the past ten years. ***Join a bunch of Barn Bros for the Top Gun event in March.

Next Tuesday we will be viewing the final episode of The Pacific, Part 10. As we have been watching this series, I've found myself holding my breath and overwhelmed at the intensity of the battle scenes...observing what these soldiers endured. In the midst of wave after wave of intense fighting, tragic loss and horrendous conditions, these soldiers resolved to move forward with the mission that they were chosen for.This was their story...and this is our story. I've seen many emotions stirred up in the men at The Barn during the viewing of this film, and during our breakout groups...but just like those soldiers fighting in The Pacific, we will resolve to move forward in our lives, taking back ground that our enemy has taken, and fight for each other and for those we love, not in our own strength but in the strength and with the leading of The Lord of Heavens Armies!

Our special guest this week will be Bill Smoaks father, Lee Smoak. He served in the U.S. Army's 124th Cavalry Regiment in the China-Burma-India theater during World War II and retired as a first lieutenant. A native of Orangeburg, S.C., he was drafted at 18 during his second year at The Citadel. On Feb. 2, 1945, his unit was ordered to take a mountaintop near LoiKang, Burma, away from the
Japanese.

Nothing like men getting away from it all! Blessed to have a couple of days at Camp Canaan, an island in the Catawba River on the northern coast of Rock Hill, SC. Thanks to Eric for leading in worship and thanks to all the brothers who spent the weekend with us....lots of "heart" stuff...we believe God had something for each of us....that "thing" may be very clear (one brother said Sunday morning, "I'm a different man than I was three days ago") or it may be something that will show up on the journey days, weeks, or months ahead. Regardless of the depth of individual revelation, we all acknowledged that "as iron sharpens iron, so one man sharpens another." The Lone Ranger thing will not get us where God wants us to go.

"The Barn"... How It All Started, Part II

Continued from Part I...

About a year before I started the meetings at The Barn I was at my church and had gone up to speak with one of the pastors. After a brief exchange he looked at me and asked, " when are you and your wife going to start a home group"? I had just returned from my second Boot Camp in Colorado. I told him that what I really was interested in was "ministry for men", and told him of some of my experiences with the Wild at Heart message. He responded with, " ain't that somethin,..well if you do it and it works, we'll get behind you!"
Looking back, I think that I left a little discouraged. What I was wanting, in my heart...and my flesh, was for him to validate what I was doing and help me to get a men's ministry going for the church!...I'm so thankful today that he didn't!

We cranked up at the Barn utilizing a DVD series that Ransomed Heart Ministries made available. Many that have read Wild at Heart don't realize that there is a DVD series. One brother who showed up at The Barn about 4 years ago had read the book several times, then after going through the series said it was a "2 x 4 experience" for him...in a good way. He then went on to offer the series at his church several times...and is now an integral part of leadership at The Barn.

About 18 months after that conversation with my pastor, we were both leaving church one day and he asked, "Are you still meeting with those guys at The Barn?" I said that we were and he asked if I wanted to put out some fliers or brochures at the church. I responded "no, I don't think so"...this was because within the 8 guys that were meeting at The Barn, five different churches were represented. In consideration of those involved, I didn't think that it would be appropriate to make it a "one church" thing. Once again my pastor responded "ain't that somethin"! ...I believe that having multiple church's involved has helped to make the whole experience at The Barn more dynamic.

We had several meetings about what was going on at The Barn. He even got his interns to start reading Wild at Heart. My pastor was very supportive of what we were doing and gave me a couple of opportunities to be a part of the "men's outreach" that they were launching at the church. The men's outreach at the church evolved into a monthly meeting with a "speaker". The best part was when they would break up into small groups. where the men could share and build relationships.

I struggle personally with the way most churches approach "Men's Ministry". It turns into bringing in a "speaker", creating some type of service work, or having a worship night, mostly with little opportunity for the men to interact with each other. . All of these are great, but I have never seen where these get into the real issues that men are faced with these days. In regard to the issues that men face, I've heard pastors say "get over it" or stop doing that" etc. etc. If that really worked, I believe the fatherlessness, abandonment, divorce, addictions, and the lack of men participating in the church would be less of an epidemic than it is.

Over the last five and half years it's been amazing how men have "wound up" at The Barn. We've run in to groups of men in coffee shops looking to connect with others. Some have heard about it in casual conversations with friends, while others are sent to us from local Christian counseling. We've never really advertised or promoted The Barn formally...Guys just keep showing up...and more often than not, they keep coming back. About 8 months ago during a meeting at The Barn there were 19 men that represented 9 different church fellowships in attendance. I was wondering, "why do these guys show up here on Tuesdays"?...Maybe they are getting something that they can't get (or not offered) elsewhere.

Even though I know that "mens ministry" could be so much more than most make it, I'm thankful that God has given us this "mission" at The Barn. My hope is that we can be a resource for the entire body of Christ by continuing to offer a place where men can gather and experience More Life, Love and Freedom with Jesus Christ. As Jesus wanted His disciples to spend time with Him, we are intentional about creating an environment where men can experience God, receive healing and restoration in their hearts, and become the men, fathers, sons, husbands, brothers, and friends that God designed us to be!

We didn't start out to be a "ministry"...but "Ministry" is what happens... at The Barn

"The Barn"... How It All Started

In October of 2003, a great friend called me from Georgia to tell me about this thing that some of the men in his church were doing...some kind of "video series" from a book called "Wild at Heart".
He had never done anything like this before so I went and bought this book...

Before I continue, here's a little background...

I was raised in a denominational church where I had experienced "religion", but not so much of a "relationship" with Jesus Christ. After wandering for many years, I rededicated my life to Christ when I was 30 years old. This happened in a more charismatic church where I enjoyed some great teaching, awesome worship, new friends and ultimately met and married my wife.

During my years at this church, there was a series of meetings led by the senior pastor called "Real Men". I don't really recall much of the content of the series, but was excited about the idea of 200 +/- men gathering every week to fellowship, and build relationships. When the "series" was over the meetings were suppose to continue. Unfortunately without the senior pastors leading, the numbers diminished quickly...75, then 30, until it was about 7 or 8 of us that met every Wednesday night at a small home near the church...This was my first exposure to a "Band of Brothers", men coming together, warts and all, worshiping, telling stories...it was good.

Years later, at the age of 43, after reading "Wild at Heart" by John Eldredge, I realized how I had been "walking alone", in the midst of many acquaintances, fellow workers, and relationships that never got beyond the veneer of the skin...to the Heart. There was also the realization that too much of my "Christian walk" had been about looking the right way, saying the right things, and being a "nice guy" with a "sinful and deceitful heart". When the internal struggles of performing to standards that I couldn't maintain sent me into a tailspin that led to old habits and addictions resurfacing in my life, I really did not have an answer...I mean I did have the answer, I just didn't know I had it...

"Wild at Heart" helped me get back to God's word, and started revealing truths that made the bible come alive as it related to me personally. The concept of knowing that we are in a battle, and we shouldn't fight alone brought clarity to many aspects of my life.

In May 2004, I traveled to Buena Vista Colorado for my first Wild at Heart Boot Camp. Over 375 men, from all different backgrounds, ages 19 to 75 converged on a Young Life Camp in the Rocky Mountains for four days of "unplugging from the matrix of day to day life" to experience the most "non religious" Christian gathering that I have ever been a part of. Thought provoking messages presented in ways that I could understand. Time alone with God asking Him questions and writing down what I felt Him speaking to me in my journal. I experienced a Freedom and communion with God that I'd never experienced before in my life. It was a realization of what Jesus said of himself as to "why He came"in Luke 4, when He quoted Isaiah 61.

In March of 2005, after going back for another Boot Camp, and also experiencing this life changing message in a small group format locally...I knew that I wanted to share this with other men. So the first Wednesday in March, 8 men and myself, with a 27' TV, a make shift surround sound system, and open hearts, started meeting at "The Barn"!....to be continued

Launching ""Roundtable of Fellowship (without the table) by The Fire

Greetings my Brothers,

I hope that this post finds you well, engaged,and knowing that you are Loved by an awesome Father in Heaven...

Last week we launched our 8 week journey in two different series at The Barn, "Fathered By God" and "Wild at Heart", based upon material from John Eldredge. I want to congratulate each of you for joining us on this expedition., and like most expeditions, the terrain will change frequently, and sometimes unexpectedly...rocky climbs with limited footing, rivers to cross, with what may seem like Class V rapids,as well as many opportunities to rest in yet to be discovered "Clefts of the Rock" that will offer shelter.

The awesome thing is that you are not on this journey alone...and that God is more committed to your success than you are!

I need to offer a few thoughts regarding the logistics of what will be happening during the next several weeks at The Barn.

We have twenty-five or so men signed up for "Fathered" by God", and about a dozen participating in the "Wild at Heart" series for the first time. One of the most important components of this series is the "breakout" time in the smaller groups.This is where you will get to know others, and they will get to know you. Because of the importance of these times we will close the "series" after this week, as well as not allow visitors, newcomers, those that are not committed to the 8 week series, etc. to come in and out of the small groups. This can be disruptive and can sabotage the whole series... With this said I want to put a couple of thoughts out there that will help us all to navigate over the next few weeks. With the number of men that we have participating, and the limited number of "breakout areas" that we have available, your cooperation is greatly appreciated!

* In The "Fathered by God" series there will be 4 Company's of men, ABLE, BRAVO, CHARLIE, & DOG. Those who have signed up have been pre-assigned to one of these. It will be important to stay with the same Company from week to week...There may be a time due to attendance that there are only 3 men in your group...that's OK! To make the most of the time that we have, we are trying to limit the size of each Company to 7 men.
* You may not be in the same group as the guy that you brought to The Barn, or came with...this is by design...It's OK!
* There will be a "facilitator" in each group who will be the guide. He is instructed to keep the conversations on the point of the series subject matter. He will also be sensitive to the Holy Spirit's leading and follow accordingly.
* If your Company finishes before others, please be courteous and minimize any chatter and traffic that could be disruptive- The "Roundtable (without the table) by the Fire Pit" will be the Rally point for conversations when your Company breaks for the evening. We will be setting up a table and coffee-maker out on The Porch to help minimize disruptions for the men who are still engaged with their Company.
* If the "Wild at Heart" Group has finished for the night, The "Living Room" is also available for a game of pool, Foosball, or fellowship.

I have made known my hope that anyone who has never been through the "Wild at Heart" series at least twice, be plugged into the series, or if you have been through WAH, jump into "Fathered by God"...these have been foundational to what's been happening at The Barn for over five years...It's what we do, and God has blessed it, and many men through it.
The Barn at its core is meant to be a place of refuge, a place of equipping and discipleship, and a place to connect with God, and other men. It's a place for us, as men to CHANGE!
The Barn has also been described as a place of "covering", to offer prayers, friendship, and support for those who are engaged in other initiatives and battles...we will continue to offer this "Covering"!...

For those who are unable to commit to this series, we are going to launch the"Roundtable of Fellowship(without the table) by The Fire"...This will also be available to all newcomers and visitors. My hope is to have a "Barn Alumni" (someone who has been engaged and participated in the WAH series) available for these, to help facilitate conversations, and answer any questions that may come up about "The Barn".

Regarding the "Roundtable" I offer the following...

The Round Table is King Arthur's famed table in the Arthurian legend, around which he and his Knights congregate. As its name suggests, it has no head, implying that everyone who sits there has equal status. The table was first described in 1155 by Wace, who relied on previous depictions of Arthur's fabulous retinue. The symbolism of the Round Table developed over time; by the close of the 12th century it had come to represent the chivalric order associated with Arthur's court.

If any of you have a spare "Camp Chair" that you'd like to bring to use, or donate for using around the fire...we'd appreciate it!

Because There is much to prepare fore on a weekly basis, we would appreciate some of you helping us by coming early and assist with setup, coffee, fire, etc.

Thank you to all of those of you who have supported The Barn in so many ways...financially, donating items that we use, setting up, etc. It is so helpful and encouraging to see you offer yourselves to take more ground in the lives of men (and through them their wives & families) for the Kingdom of God!

We're pumped about a new video series, Fathered by God, that will begin Tuesday, September 21. We'll also be starting the Wild at Heart/Band of Brothers series for guys that have never been through that.

Surprises at the Barn. One of the pioneers of the Promise Keepers movement, Glenn Wagner, will be sharing his story tonight....join us! A few weeks back, we were surprised by the appearance of retired General Jerry Boykin, original member of Delta Force and leader of the Green Berets. "Wow" and "Thank you, General" is about all we can say. Just finished his book, Never Surrender..........excellent!

Wild at Heart Bootcamp in Colorado! Thumbs up to Bill D, David G, and new barn guy, Joel, on their trip to Bootcamp in Colorado....looking forward to hearing what God did there. Below are the words off the Ransomed Heart website from a fellow who just returned:

I almost didn't come to Boot Camp. Even after I made plane reservations. I was afraid to be with other men (intimidation). But I came anyway because I was chosen the first time I put my name in the lottery. I guess God did want me to go.

Before I came I knew that I had a very severe wound of shame. However, during my Friday session quiet time with God, He showed me a tree that was dead and withered. He said, "Son, you are not like that tree. You are like that tree over there. Tall, green, sturdy and strong."

God said, "Look around son. This is your adventure now. But with adventure comes battles. I will be with you during these battles."

I know the shame did not come from God or from me. It's not my fault. My heart has been, and will continue to be, restored. I have something to offer. I have something to give!

Summer "Knights” at the Barn with Al Woods
THIS Tuesday the 13th... Come join the Brethren at The Barn as our summer "Stories Series" continues. This week we welcome Al Woods to share his story, and his heart.

Please get there early for fellowship...then we start at 7:15!!

Al Woods is a 1981 graduate of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Growing up in Gray Georgia, he quickly became successful in basketball and later earned All-American status in high school and college. Al was selected to play for the U.S. Men's Olympic Basketball team, and after playing four years for Dean Smith at UNC- Chapel Hill, was the 4th overall pick selected in the 1st round of the 1984 NBA draft by the Atlanta Hawks. He went on to play professionally for the San Diego Clippers, the Seattle Supersonics and the Dallas Mavericks as well as in South America, Italy, and France.

Al is the 5th all time leading scorer at UNC-Chapel Hill. He set, and still holds, the individual record for the most points scored in an NCAA semi-final game, scorching Ralph Sampson and Virginia, with 39 points. “Of all of the UNC players I’ve seen”, said Woody Durham, the Tar Heels radio play-by-play announcer since 1971, “Al Wood was the very best shooter. Al has to be #1---His shot was so pure”.

As an accomplished athlete, Al played under some of the finest collegiate and NBA coaches, including five hall of fame coaches. He saw true leadership modeled and has demonstrated the gift of leadership in his own life.

Al is currently an ordained minister on the staff of Morningstar Ministries in Fort Mill, SC. He is also the Principal and Athletic Director of their K-12 private Christian school, Comenius School for Creative Leadership. He has a passion to train, equip and release world-changing young people with godly character who are well-rounded academically, physically and spiritually.

Al met his wife of 26 years, Robin, at UNC-Chapel Hill. They were married in 1984 and have four children. One son, AJ, who is a 2007 graduate of UNC-Chapel Hill, Martina, a 2010 UNC-Chapel Hill graduate and women’s basketball team member, Candace, a junior at UNC as well and also a women’s basketball team member and Carmen, a freshman entering UNC-Chapel Hill in the fall of 2010.

In his spare time, Al is an avid golfer and enjoys spending time with his family.

Perry Tuttle was a first round draft pick in the 1982 NFL draft and played 10 years of pro ball (NFL & CFL). Perry will always be remembered for the game winning catch during the 1982 Orange Bowl that won Clemson a national championship. He remains the only Clemson athlete to appear on the cover of Sports Illustrated.

Journey into The Heart

If we are really going to help men. And through them
their families, their loved ones, and the world, three things have to happen.

First… a man has to get his own heart back. Without that he isn’t going to make it.

Second… he has to find his place in the battle. God has a
call on every man’s life,... and nothing seems to fit until we find the role we were meant for.

Third… we have to teach him how to fight.

This Tuesday, 7:00 PM Start time! at The Barn, we
will launch an "Intensive Journey into The Heart"! This is going to be a smaller "platoon' of men than what we have had the last couple of times doing the "Wild at Heart" series. It will be smaller, and more intentional.

This is for those who have not been through the series and have been participating at The Barn...It's also for some of you who have intended on doing the entire series but have missed 2 or more weeks during the series...You need to do this. There will also be a limited number of slots for those who have completed the series, but want to go deeper...to perhaps be a "platoon leader".

This is The Mission of The Barn. "Walking with God & other Men" to provide...
a) an awakening of the Heart,( Boot Camp)
b) Restoration of Wounds (Triage)
c) equipping and training
(Redeployment)

Please notice that "Nursing Home" is not
mentioned above...

We are after Irreversible change! This will require risk, honesty with yourself and others, and a willingness to participate & persevere "throughout" this journey

There will be additional training taking place on the "living room" side of The Barn for those that will not be joining us on this mission....space is limited.

Saturday Night, Nov 7 ~ Date Night at the Barn! Yes, the women-folk have a chance to check out the barn. Dessert, fellowship, music....6:30-8:30 p.m.

REPORT....it was a blast...thanks to Otherwoods, the Official Barn Band, for sharing some great music and worship with us. Some serious dessert was consumed from awesome cobbler to HACs (Homemade Almond Cookies) to a variety of items that resulted from collaboration with Barn Men and Mr. Teeter.

Tuesday, October 13 ~ Starting series on Fathered by God...inspired by new John Eldredge book, Kyle Kirchhoff leads the way for us.

In Lord of the Rings, Sam asks Frodo, "I wonder what kind of tale we have fallen into?" A great question, don't you think? John Eldredge and Brent Curtis took a swing at it in, The Sacred Romance: Life on the road takes us into our heart, for only when we are present in the deep sentences can God speak to them. That’s why the Story is a journey; it has to be lived, it cannot simply be talked about. When we face trials, our most common reaction is to ask God, “Why won’t you relieve us?” And when he doesn’t, we resignedly ask, “What do you want me to do?” Now we have a new question: “Where is the Romance headed?”

There is another great “revealing” in our life on the road. We run our race, we travel our journey, in the words of Hebrews, before “a great cloud of witnesses” (12:1). When we face a decision to fall back or press on, the whole universe holds its breath— angels, demons, our friends and foes, and the Trinity itself— watching with bated breath to see what we will do. We are still in the drama of Act III and the heart of God is still on trial. The question that lingers from the fall of Satan and the fall of man remains: Will anyone trust the great heart of the Father, or will we shrink back in faithless fear? As we grow into the love of God and the freedom of our own hearts, we grow in our ability to cast our vote on behalf of God. Our acts of love and sacrifice, the little decisions to leave our false loves behind, and the great struggles of our heart reveal to the world our true identity: We really are the sons and daughters of God.

Wild Men in the Mountains!

Over 20 guys with Barn connections joined 280+ men in the mountains of Virginia for the 2009 Top Gun Advance. Held at Young Life's Camp Rockbridge from March 19-22, men came primarily from D.C., the Carolinas, and Virginia with representation from Texas, New Jersey, Arkansas and Califorina (we believe he found Jesus). Hosted by Zoweh Ministries, God stirred men in a profound way. Stay tuned for the soon-to-be-released-AWARD-WINNING YouTube video!

Many of us have spent years and even decades learning from the word of God. Where some of us have "missed it" is the connection between the head and the heart. Am I REALLY walking in strength and honor and freedom? Is there more for me than the "rules"? Who has the Father called me to be? Is it a heart issue? John Eldredge shares the following from the book "Desire"...
Dare we forget King David? Yes, his passions got him in a heap of trouble—and gave us our book of worship, the Psalms. Sure, Peter was a hotheaded disciple always quick with a reply. Remember in the Garden of Gethsemane—he’s the one who lopped off the ear of the high priest’s servant. But he was also the first to acknowledge that Jesus was the Messiah, and despite his Good Friday betrayals he became a key apostle, contributed important pieces to the Scripture, and followed Jesus all the way to his own crucifixion, asking to be nailed to the cross upside down because he was not worthy to die in the manner of his Lord. Surely we remember that Paul was once Saul, the fiery young Pharisee “advancing in Judaism beyond many Jews of my own age and . . . extremely zealous for the traditions of my fathers” (Gal. 1:14). His zeal made him the foremost persecutor of the church. When Christ knocked him off his donkey on the Damascus road, Paul was hunting down the church, “uttering threats with every breath” (Acts 9:1 NLT). Christ captured his zeal, and after Damascus it led him to “work harder than all the other apostles” (1 Cor. 15:10 NLT). Augustine was also a passionate young man, sexually licentious, enamored with the pleasures of Rome, “scratching the sore of lust,” as he would call it after Christ got hold of him. He went on to become one of the great pillars of the church, laying the foundation for the rise of Christendom after the fall of Rome. Desire, a burning passion for more, is at the heart of both saints and sinners. Those who would kill the passion altogether would murder the very essence that makes heroes of the faith.

Dear All,

Finally, Batya and I slept through the night undisturbed without waking up 2-4 times in the night. I feel rested after a long day yesterday in which I went to the border of the Gaza Strip where the other journalists from all over the world were doing their reports in many languages.

You may wonder why I was there? I was preparing a video report for Christian television in the UK and for our internet news site at: www.jnnnews.com. It should be up and loaded soon, keep watching. As I was taping with my cameraman and good friend Jan, a plume of white smoke went off from the heart of Gaza City and then an alarm went off in Sderot behind us with only a maximum of 15 seconds to take cover from the incoming Qassam rocket which missed the small town and struck about 200 meters from where we stood. We got most of it on tape while running for cover. Only minutes later another Qassam rocket came our way but only about 300 meters away.

You would think that the foreign TV crews would get the message but obviously not. What will it take for them to understand the nature of Islamic terrorism?

While we were there I had a real burden just to pray for Ariel who was probably somewhere within 5-10 miles of where I stood, maybe even much less. Fierce fighting was taking place and some report we received told us that a few paratroopers from our son's regiment were wounded. Thank the Lord, Ariel was not on the list of wounded, however we do care for all of them and continue to pray for all their safety. They have to have great discernment due to suicide bombers, several of whom have been shot in trying to reach the soldiers. This we need to focus more on in prayer, to expose the suicide bombers before they can reach their targets amongst us.
One encouraging piece of news came yesterday in the daily major Israeli newspaper; we are convinced that Ariel is in one of the photos. Seven of us who have seen the photo all agree its him from a side view. It is as if Ariel was sending us a message that everything is gonna be alright.
Just a little while ago our plumber Yossi walked in to fix the heating system and although not religious in character he looked at us and said, "Ariel is going to be alright, he belongs first to the Lord and then to you his parents. He's in God's hands." This is coming from a Jewish unbeliever, maybe not so far off in reality. Keep him in prayer.

In closing for today, I have had to cancel a two week ministry and fund raising tour for the most obvious reasons. Please pray that the ministry work of Vision for Israel & The Joseph Storehouse will not lack in any way and will be able to meet its financial obligations and ongoing aid and media projects to reach the nation of Israel.

David Shirah, 1950-2008-Eternity

I have been crucified with Christ and no longer live, but Christ lives in me. The life I live in the body, I live by faith in the Son of God who loved me and gave himself for me. Gal 2:20

"Big Dave" (that's what I called him!) was a man transformed by God.

A fighter in his younger years, he realized he was made in the image of a God who is a warrior. Dave became a new kind of fighter-a warrior-for the King of Kings. Dave became dangerous for good.

I don't know all the details but I wanted you to know that Dave left this Earth yesterday and jumped into the other side of eternity.

Please lift up his family and wife Robin. Pray that his memorial service Friday will glorify God in an awesome way. Join us if you can at 11 a.m. ~ Steele Creek Church, this Friday, December 26.

To those of us who knew Dave, we say, "Thank you, Lord" for blessing us with this great brother who encouraged us and walked with us.

Friday, 12/26/2008 UPDATE: Wow! What a memorial service. A crowd of folks turned out at Steele Creek Church to hear about David Shirah, his past, his present and his future. It was clear that many of the guys he partied hard with over the last forty years have been touched-as David was-by the grace of God. I'm sure others are searching. I know we are all on a journey. The service was a great testimony to what Jesus did in David's life and to a God that longs for all of us to come into His glorious light.

This week….The wound…..we must recognize and deal with the poser! We must also go to the wound! A wound that can't be touched, is a wound that is not healed….The enemy does not want you at the barn this week!..You must be intentional and press on.

Now , for a couple of reminders and updates…

2) If you have the field manual, work your way through a few of the questions regarding "The Poser"…If you don't have a field manual, see the PDF file attachment to this email and work through a couple of the questions there.

3) Men…This is our third week. I hope the small groups are working well for you…It is such an encouragement to see you, and hear how you are getting together with each other…even one on ones. This will bare much fruit in your lives as you continue to walk in restoration and Life! ENGAGE!! Three – The Wound

I need to clarify three things when it comes to finding our “wounds”

First, it is not necessarily one clear wound, given on an unforgettable day you remember in detail. Many men can recall the day they received a soul-wound from their father that somehow defined the rest of their relationship with him. But for others, it is an accumulation of subtle wounds and messages give over time. Second, I believe that every man carries a wound(s). No matter how good a man your father was, and may still be, he is not Jesus Christ. Every father is a son of Adam, and every father himself grew up on a world
far from Eden. Given these two Biblical truths, be very, very cautious to come to the conclusion that you somehow escaped the father-wound. Your father may have repented deeply of his own false self as a young man, and been substantially healed of his own wound before he fathered you. But that is a rare, rare case. Finally, you have been born into a world at war. A war over the souls of men. The enemy desires to steal, kill and destroy - YOU. It is highly unlikely that he has not been successful in wounding your soul at some point in your life. Do not dismiss the assault of the enemy as you identify your wounds.

What is/are your wound(s)? Can you put words to it? Do you remember how
it was given, the way it came?

And what was the message of the wound – or the series of wounds? What did it say to you about yourself?

What agreements have you made about who you are – in essence saying “This is the way I am”? Have you ever considered deeply why you are “this way?”

Can you remember making a sort of vow when you were younger – maybe after being wounded? What was the vow?

What did you father “name” you – what identity did he bestow on you as a boy and young man?

Some wounds originate due to absence – physical, emotional, spiritual. “Not receiving a blessing from your father is an injury. Not seeing your father when you are small, never being with him, having a remote father, a workaholic father, is an injury.” Did you receive a wound of this type?

Do you live each day with a deep inner strength that comes from knowing you are a real man, that you have what it takes? Or are you a driven man, or a passive man? When did that feeling of drivenness or passivity set in? Did it originate during a certain period of life?

Many men take their “question” to the woman and want her to validate them as men. For a passive man it may mean you need to stand up to your wife. For a violent man (including achievers) it means stop abusing her. Many men make the woman their adventure. How have you handled the woman in your life? What have you been seeking from her?

What would you love to have heard from your father?

Car pooling and ride needed to the Retreat

We have several requests for rides and car pooling to the Retreat. For example, guys need rides from Huntersville, Matthews, Fort Mill and Jackson Park.

Here is my proposed plan:

Connect with a Group Leader and chose a Pace Car with a driver.

Pick a specific time for departure. Dinner starts a 6:30
Pick a meeting place with safe parking. The church has cleared for use, preferably behind small tent. That parking lot is near the cell tower in the back.

Greetings Men!

I hope that you have all had a great week and that you are fighting the Good Fight!

It is so exciting to see the hunger of the men that long to get their hearts back, find their place in the battle, and do so within a "Band of Brothers"!!

Last week we launched our Fall Initiative at "the barn" and had the largest group of men we've ever had. We appreciate you hanging in there as we endeavor to follow the Holy Spirit and make adjustments.

I just wanted to send out a couple of reminders and updates…

1) Read up Through Chapter 3 in "Wild at Heart"!

3) Please bring a chair if you have one!! This will help us in the large Formation as well as the Platoon Breakouts!

4) I am going to order "Wild at Heart Field Manuals" this week…The cost will be $11.50 each… It looked like at least two dozen men needed them by show of hands last week…Their will be an request sheet for you to sign this week if you want one…please bring cash or check this week (if cash, please bring correct change) Checks can be made out to Kevin Casner and I'll give you a receipt and make one big order.

5) Reminder…we are requesting a one time facility use fee of $20.00 each, for the entire 8 to 9 week series. This will help pay some utilities, provide water and misc. supplies for us to use at the Barn…If you cannot afford the $20.00, please see me personally…WE WANT YOU HERE! You may also bring a few dollars each time if it works better. There will be a Basket for this near the sign up sheet and "Prayer Request" Ammo Box

6) Prayer Request…We have an "Ammo Box" for Prayer request…Cards and pen are located on the same location…Your request will be prayed for!

What a great time yesterday's call was for my heart and for the life I desire--- Connected to God and Connected to Others.

Thanks to all who could make it. Here is a recap of our time...

1. What a great story about Captain Bll Eckerd and his WWII experience as well as his journey to a reunion of the 100th infantry division taking him by the Barn and Haines and Kevin and Bill's son Robin. A heart changed... yours and Capt. Bills. That is a great story. Thanks for reminding us all of the power of God and this message to come after us.

2. Remembering what happened to you. Weve all heard John and the RH team talk about the thief coming to steal, though that can happen and does, often we just file the good stuff away and don't return to it. I was struck by this a couple of weeks ago and wanted to start our time with that inviting question: So, What happened to you? God has brought us all so far from where we were that a couple of minutes on the phone obviously wont do it justice but some time with Him or another man reflecting on it will do your heart good, I'm sure of it!

3. Men on a Mission

Jeff Andrecyn and his team from Charlottesville are speakers at a men's retreat in Columbia... Carrying this message in four sessions this weekend as well as inviting these men to more at TOP GUN in March 09.

Haines, Kevin, Dan, Ernie and the Band from Charlotte are doing the Men of Steele (Steel Creek Church) men's retreat next weekend

Tad Fisher and Mark Leinberger in Richmond, Roanoke and Salem are taking their squadron into a mission for the hearts of men at their churches men's retreat in a couple of weeks.

Rob Loghery in Philly area is taking a men's Boot Camp to the Methodist churches in Nov in his area and at a Methodist Camp in the Pocono's.

Kevin Keifer from DC is taking 12 men in his foxhole to Nagshead (the beach) to go deeper in their friendships and relationships. Sharing their stories and finding more clarity in their lives.

The Zoweh team Durham/Chapel Hill is offering a couples weekend Oct 24-26. A getaway for us (the couples of the eastern front) to enjoy getting to know one another from the Eastern Front. There is still room for 3 couples.

Greetings to you all and hopes that this finds you fighting the good fight!! I wanted to send out a reminder that we are getting together Tuesday night, 8/26, from 7:00 – 9:00pm at the Barn for our second Trail Marker event.

As a reminder, a Trail Marker is a time for us to gather together along this shared journey we are on and re-set our bearings, establish our "true North" again, and share fellowship. A chance to come together along the way and be among brothers. Too often, the amount of time between "series or retreats" is too great and we lose our way. The Trail Markers are intended to keep us going down the path in the right direction.

Dan gave a great message last month on the Matrix and how we are to view the "world". I hope that you have been able to apply some of what he talked about.

This next session will be one you won't want to miss as we discuss Band's of Brother's and living in community with others. This battle we were born into is not one that we are supposed to experience alone.

Greetings to you all! I hope this finds you well and fighting the good fight.

Isn't it easy to get sucked into the Matrix??? It is for me. I got back from vacation last Wednesday and I don't feel like I have stopped since. The matrix is such a "slippery slope" that if we don't constantly stay alert to it, we can slide into it quickly and without notice. Praise the Lord that HE is always there with a hand to pull us up. We just have to reach out.

In speaking with our brother, Kevin Casner, this afternoon, he graciously offered the Barn………so, how about a few Trail Marker events??

First, you may be asking….what is a Trail Marker event? A Trail Marker is a time for us to gather together along this shared journey we are on and re-set our bearings, establish our "true North" again, and share fellowship. A chance to come together along the way and be among brothers. Too often, the amount of time between "series or retreats" is too great and we lose our way. The Trail Markers are intended to keep us going down the path in the right direction.

Mark your calendars for Tuesday dates of 7/29, 8/26, and 9/23, 7:00pm – 9:00pm, for a get together at the Barn for a time of prayer, a great message, and great fellowship. We will have some good things to share as it relates to "walking this path" that we are on. Bring a friend with you as well. We would love to have them.

It's awesome to see God stirring the hearts of men. Last Friday, May 23rd of '08, 17 men from across the region gathered in Greensboro for five hours to share their hearts and to pray. Men with a couple things in common. 1-At some point in each journey, God crashed the party and let "Mr. Nice Church Guy" know that a battle was on and we were in it. A battle that requires strength and courage. A battle that requires dependence on the grace of God and a heart to follow the Wild Goose. (J. Eldredge explains, "The early Celtic Christians called the Holy Spirit "the wild goose." And the reason why is they knew that you cannot tame him. But if you follow his haunting call, he'll take you on an adventure.") 2-To a man, we agreed we are "compelled." To see men connect with God and connect with each other.

Lewis, Neil Anderson (Freedom in Christ Ministries), Bands of Brothers are forming. Friday's meeting brought together men from areas including D.C., Charlottesville, Richmond, Roanoke, Raleigh, Durham, Greensboro, Charlotte, Shelby...and Bakersville (not for from Spruce Pine in the NC mtns).

There's a battle going on and we believe we are called to fight together. Stay tuned.
